A decision has been made to officially separate the seven government colleges from Dhaka University, marking a significant change for these institutions.

This decision was reached during an urgent meeting between Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Nayaz Ahmad Khan, and the principals of the seven colleges on Monday afternoon.

The Vice-Chancellor shared that the previous plan to admit students from these colleges under Dhaka University will no longer be in place starting from the 2024-2025 academic year. This change is in response to the students’ demands, with a special committee set up by the Ministry of Education recommending the colleges’ separation. The committee suggested that from the next academic year, these colleges should operate independently.

For the upcoming academic year, the Ministry’s expert committee will decide on important matters such as the number of seats and admission fees, considering the students’ requests.

However, students who are currently enrolled in the ongoing programs under Dhaka University will not be affected by this change. The university will ensure that their education continues smoothly and without disruption.

The Vice-Chancellor called for unity and responsibility among everyone involved to maintain the continuity of academic activities.

Earlier, on Sunday evening, students from the seven colleges staged a protest by blocking the Science Lab intersection, accusing Dhaka University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, of misconduct. The situation escalated around 10 p.m. when the students attempted to surround the Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s residence, leading to clashes between Dhaka University students and the seven college students in the Nilkhet area.

In response to the unrest, the Vice-Chancellor announced plans to meet with the principals of the seven colleges for further discussions.

The seven colleges—Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Government Shahid Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College—were affiliated with Dhaka University back on February 17, 2017, in an effort to ease the pressure on the National University.
