China sending emergency humanitarian aid to Gaza

China has stepped forward to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, aiming to address the urgent needs of those affected by the ongoing crisis. Xu Wei, a spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency, announced that the aid is being routed through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the Palestinian National Authority, as reported by CGTN.

The situation in Gaza is dire. Ten days into the conflict between Israel and Hamas, relentless bombardments and a blockade have left over 1 million people—nearly half of Gaza’s population—displaced. Essential resources like electricity, water, food, fuel, and medical supplies are critically low, while civilians are evacuating northern Gaza following Israeli warnings.

The conflict erupted on October 7, when Hamas launched “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,” a surprise offensive involving rocket attacks and infiltrations into Israel by land, sea, and air. Hamas stated that the assault was in retaliation for the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque and increasing settler violence. Israel responded with “Operation Swords of Iron,” targeting Hamas positions within Gaza.

The toll has been devastating. Over 2,750 Palestinians, including 750 children, have been killed in Gaza by Israeli airstrikes, while the death toll in Israel stands at 1,300.

China has consistently called for a peaceful resolution, emphasizing the need for justice for the Palestinian people. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Israel to adhere to international law and condemned “collective punishment” in Gaza. During a call with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Wang warned that military responses and cycles of violence would only deepen the crisis.

“While the Israeli people have assurances of survival, who is ensuring the survival of the Palestinian people?” Wang asked during a news conference with EU foreign affairs chief Joseph Borrell in Beijing. He also pressed the question, “When will the Palestinian nation return to their homeland?”

As part of its diplomatic efforts, China is sending Zhai Jun, its special envoy for Middle East affairs, to visit nations in the region. Beijing continues to advocate for a “two-state solution” as the only viable path to peace, urging all parties to de-escalate and return to negotiations swiftly.
