The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has announced that it will be conducting a mobile court to curb the use of fireworks, firecrackers, and flying lanterns during the Thirty Fast Night celebrations. Those who engage in these activities will face penalties, including fines and possible jail time.

This information was shared through a circular issued by the ministry on Monday, December 30. The circular reminds the public that fireworks, crackers, and lanterns violate the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2006, and those caught engaging in such actions will be punished. The first offense can lead to one month in jail, a fine of 5,000 Bangladeshi Taka, or both. Repeat offenses carry harsher penalties, with imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of 10,000 Taka, or both.

The ministry has pointed out that fireworks and firecrackers contribute to both noise and air pollution. Excessive noise, in particular, can lead to serious health issues like heart disease, stroke, and stress. Additionally, flying lanterns pose a fire hazard and threaten biodiversity.

Letters have been sent to clubs and organizations in Dhaka, urging them to refrain from using fireworks, crackers, and flying lanterns during the upcoming English New Year celebrations.

Environmental groups and social media users have also joined the call to stop these harmful practices, citing the negative impact on both the environment and public health. The government’s stance reflects growing concerns about the dangers of noise and air pollution, as well as the importance of protecting both human well-being and the environment.
