Inflation saw a slight decrease in December, yet it stayed above 10 percent for the second consecutive month, continuing to put pressure on those with fixed or low incomes.
According to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks the price changes of a basket of goods and services, fell to 10.89 percent in December from 11.38 percent in November. This drop was primarily due to the stabilization of food prices with the arrival of winter vegetables.
Food inflation eased to 12.92 percent in December, down from 13.80 percent the previous month. Similarly, non-food inflation also saw a slight decline, reaching 9.26 percent in December compared to 9.39 percent in November.
Despite efforts by authorities, Bangladesh has been struggling with persistent inflation for over two years. In fact, the annual average inflation climbed to 10.22 percent in November, up from 10.05 percent the previous month, according to Bangladesh Bank.
