In Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat, a tragic accident occurred early Monday morning (January 13) when a cargo truck lost control and crashed into a house, resulting in the death of a woman, Nuri Begum, who was sleeping at the time. Her three-year-old grandson, Abdullah, was also injured in the incident.
The crash took place on the Burimari-Lalmonirhat highway in the Patikapara Bottila area of Hatibandha upazila. According to local sources, Nuri Begum’s son, Sagar Hossain, lives in Dhaka with his wife, and Nuri Begum had been living in a small, tin-roofed house with her grandson near the highway. They were part of a low-income household, and that fateful morning, the truck veered off course and struck their home.
As soon as the news spread, fire service personnel and local residents rushed to the scene. After nearly an hour and a half of intense rescue efforts, they were able to rescue young Abdullah, who was found alive. However, Nuri Begum was discovered about four hours later, but unfortunately, she had passed away. The incident caused significant traffic congestion along the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway.
Imran Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge of the Fire Service, explained that the truck, which was carrying cement, lost control and collided with the house, leading to the woman’s death. The other injured family members were quickly transported to Hatibandha Hospital for treatment.
Mahmudun Nabi, the Officer-in-Charge of Hatibandha Police Station, confirmed that Abdullah was rescued alive but Nuri Begum did not survive. Fortunately, traffic flow on the highway has since returned to normal. The incident has deeply affected the local community, with many offering condolences to the grieving family.
