Chennai: Tamil superstar-turned-politician Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to hold its first general council meeting on February 26, 2025, in Mahabalipuram. The event marks a significant milestone in the party’s journey since its formation on February 2, 2024.
Vijay’s entry into politics has stirred the political scene in Tamil Nadu, with TVK positioning itself as a strong voice against corruption and divisiveness. When he announced the formation of TVK, Vijay emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing these issues, vowing to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections while staying away from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He also refrained from aligning with any political party for the national elections.
Earlier milestones in TVK’s journey included the unveiling of the party flag and official flag song on August 22, 2024, at the party headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai. On October 27, 2024, TVK held its inaugural conference in Vikravandi, Villupuram district, attracting an estimated 3 lakh attendees. The event led to significant traffic congestion along the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway, especially in Vikravandi and Mundiyampakkam.
During the Vikravandi conference, Vijay made his political stance clear by labeling the BJP as his ideological adversary and the DMK as his political rival. He criticized the DMK for being a family-dominated party that exploits the “Dravidian identity” for personal gain and accused the BJP of promoting divisive politics.
In response, the DMK dismissed TVK as the “C-team” of the BJP, suggesting that Vijay’s political ambitions were aligned with the BJP’s interests. The BJP, on the other hand, urged Vijay to focus on public welfare rather than political rhetoric, reminding him of the support he had received from various political factions, including the BJP, in his journey so far.
Vijay’s growing influence in Tamil Nadu politics is evident from the success of his fan club, the All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (AITVMI), which won 115 out of 169 seats it contested in the 2021 local body elections. This electoral success has strengthened his political credibility, especially when compared to rivals like Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) and Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which failed to secure any seats.
As TVK prepares for its first general council meeting, political observers are closely watching Vijay’s moves. His insistence on forming alliances only with parties that recognize his leadership suggests his ambition to aim for the Chief Minister’s post in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
With the February 26 meeting approaching, all eyes are on Vijay as he continues to shape TVK’s political future.
