Bangladesh has emerged as the fastest-growing apparel exporter to the United States in January 2025, recording a remarkable 45.93% year-on-year growth, according to the latest data published by the Office of Textiles and Apparel (Otexa) and compiled by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
US imports of Bangladeshi apparel reached $799.65 million in January 2025, a substantial increase from $547.95 million during the same month in 2024. This surge places Bangladesh ahead of all other major apparel suppliers, surpassing growth rates from countries such as Indonesia (41.70%), India (33.64%), and Vietnam (19.90%).
Bangladesh’s Competitive Edge
This growth is attributed to several factors, including Bangladesh’s competitive pricing, enhanced production capabilities, and strong commitment to sustainable and ethical manufacturing practices. Industry experts have noted that the country’s ability to meet the rising demand for affordable yet high-quality apparel, alongside its focus on improving factory compliance and sustainability, has made Bangladesh a key player in the global apparel supply chain.
Mohiuddin Rubel, a former director of BGMEA, emphasized the importance of continuing investments in sustainability and innovation to maintain this growth. “The diversification of sourcing by US retailers, along with Bangladesh’s efforts to improve product quality and factory conditions, has strengthened its position in the global apparel market,” Rubel told The Business Standard (TBS).
Shifting Global Sourcing Dynamics
The rise in exports from Bangladesh and other emerging markets like Indonesia, India, and Cambodia reflects a broader diversification of sourcing strategies by US buyers. Experts suggest that factors such as competitive production costs, geopolitical considerations, and trade policies may be influencing this trend. Bangladesh’s focus on sustainability and ethical practices has further bolstered its appeal in the US market.
In contrast, China, the world’s largest apparel exporter, saw slower growth compared to Bangladesh, with a 13.72% increase in apparel exports to the US, reaching $1.6 billion. While still a dominant player, China’s growth remains relatively lower compared to some of its competitors. Meanwhile, Vietnam also recorded a significant 19.90% increase in apparel exports, amounting to $1.44 billion.
Challenges for Some Suppliers
While Bangladesh and other emerging markets have shown strong performance, the US apparel import market has experienced mixed results from other suppliers. Mexico saw marginal growth of just 1.26%, while Honduras experienced a sharp decline of 26.10%, with exports falling to $112.02 million. This decline highlights the competitive pressures and supply chain challenges facing certain countries.
Overall Growth in US Apparel Imports
Despite global economic challenges, the overall US apparel import market grew by 19.46% year-on-year to reach $7.2 billion in January 2025. The strong performance from Bangladesh and other countries indicates a continued demand for apparel in the US, as well as the shifting dynamics of global sourcing patterns.
The latest data underscores Bangladesh’s resilience and potential for further expansion in the US market. As the country continues to invest in sustainability and innovation, the apparel sector is poised for continued growth, reinforcing Bangladesh’s status as one of the leading suppliers of apparel to the US.
