Dhaka has ranked first on the list of cities with the worst air quality, registering an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 392 at 9:00 am this morning, classified as ‘hazardous.’ This level of air pollution presents a serious health risk to residents, according to the AQI index.
While Sunday’s air quality was categorized as ‘very unhealthy’ with an AQI score of 201, it worsened significantly today, reaching ‘hazardous’ levels. An AQI reading of 301 or higher is considered hazardous, signaling an urgent need for precautions due to its adverse effects on health.
The AQI index classifies air quality as follows:
  • 50-100: Moderate – Sensitive individuals should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
  • 101-150: Unhealthy for sensitive groups.
  • 151-200: Unhealthy.
  • 201-300: Very unhealthy.
  • 301+: Hazardous – Poses serious health risks for everyone.
Dhaka has long struggled with poor air quality, particularly during the winter months, with conditions improving slightly during the monsoon season.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is responsible for an estimated seven million deaths annually worldwide, contributing to conditions such as stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.
Residents of Dhaka are urged to take precautionary measures to minimize exposure, especially those with pre-existing health conditions, as air quality continues to deteriorate.
