The possibility of introducing Universal Military Training for the country’s youth was discussed during the Deputy Commissioners (DC) Conference held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium. The three-day conference concluded with key discussions on national security, civil-military coordination, and ensuring stability in the country ahead of Ramadan.
Abdul Hafiz, special assistant to the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, spoke to journalists after the final session, stating that the idea of offering military training to young citizens was brought up following a question from one of the DCs. Hafiz noted that such a program could contribute to national defense, with the armed forces ready to implement it, should the government approve the proposal. However, he emphasized that introducing universal military training would be a political decision that would require careful financial consideration.
“We can equip our young generation with military training to enhance national defense, but this is a decision that will depend on the government’s approval and financial resources,” Hafiz explained.
In addition to the discussion on military training, the conference also focused on improving coordination between the civil administration and the armed forces, especially in the context of maintaining law and order. Hafiz provided updates on the ongoing nationwide joint forces operation, particularly the recovery of looted weapons and ammunition from the August unrest. According to him, out of the 6,000 weapons looted, 75% had been recovered, and of the 600,000 rounds of ammunition, only 250,000 remained missing. He assured the public that joint forces were actively working on recovering the remaining weapons and ammunition.
Hafiz also warned of the growing threat posed by autocratic forces and their allies, who were allegedly regrouping and organizing activities that could destabilize the country. The DCs were instructed to stay vigilant and take preventive measures to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
Another important topic discussed was the stability of essential services ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. Hafiz stressed the importance of market stability and uninterrupted power supply, urging the DCs to take proactive steps to ensure the availability of essential goods at affordable prices and to maintain hassle-free government services. “People expect to sleep peacefully at night, find essential goods at reasonable prices, and receive hassle-free services from the government. Those working at the grassroots level are the true representatives of the government,” he added.
The discussions at the DC Conference reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to address national security concerns, improve civil-military cooperation, and maintain stability during challenging times. The idea of universal military training for youth will be further explored as part of the government’s broader strategy to bolster national defense capabilities and ensure the preparedness of the younger generation.
