Israeli Airstrikes Result in 17 Deaths in Gaza

As Palestinians across Gaza welcomed 2025 with the sounds of airstrikes instead of celebrations, Israeli airstrikes in Jabalia and al-Bureij camp resulted in the deaths of at least 17 more people, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA. The strikes come amid ongoing violence in Gaza, where the death toll has risen to 45,553, as reported by health officials in the Hamas-run enclave.

Residents of al-Bureij camp were ordered to evacuate in advance of an imminent Israeli strike targeting Hamas militants who had been launching rockets from the area. This has triggered further displacement, worsening the already dire humanitarian situation.

The overnight airstrikes also led to the killing of Abd al-Hadi Sabah, a senior Hamas member involved in the October 7, 2023 attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz. The conflict has devastated Gaza, with most of its 2.3 million people displaced and large areas in ruins.

As heavy rains flooded thousands of tents sheltering displaced people, leaving them exposed to the cold, the Israeli military continued its strikes, including on residential blocks in Beit Lahiya and Jabalia. Israel’s Defense Minister warned that airstrikes would intensify if Hamas continued to fire rockets at Israel.

The situation remains dire for civilians, with children among the most vulnerable, as the Gaza health ministry reported seven child deaths from the cold in the past week.
